Machining is a process in which material is removed from a work place in the form of chips. There are a few different types of processes called machining that fall in categories. They are drilling, turning, Milling, grinding, and chip formation. Out of all the different types of machining processes there are, drilling is by far the most commonly used and the easier of all of them. The process is used on almost all products that require a form of machining and requires a drill to be used to drill a hole in a piece of metal in most instances. However, a drill can also be used on other types of surfaces such as wood, concrete, and a few other. While there are more industrial sized drills that are meant for heavy metals and such, smaller scaled drills can be purchased for more do it yourself projects or when carpentry and building is involved. Just as with the industrial sized drill, the hand held one that can often be called a power drill or electrical drill, serves the same purpose and can be fitted with screws to attach materials together or to hold material together.


The machining process known as turning is used in accordance with an engine lathe. The turning process is used when something more specific is being required from a piece of material. The material in question is fastened to the lathe and rather than the lathe being turned, the material is instead, in which pieces are cut away and then the excess material is removed. Lathes are typically used in projects that require a bit more detail or specific cuts to be done to it such as the case with metal. The process of milling is much similar in that of drilling except that in milling the tool is not moved. In fact, the only action when milling is the piece of the tool is rotated in a circle while the material beneath it is cut. In the instance for example, of wood being used, the wood would be used in order to make various cuts in different depths or designs.

Chip Forming

The final machining type known as chip formation is a bit more of a simpler type of machining. This doesn’t require the usual powered methods that you’ll find with other types of machining in the industrial field. This one revolves around the use of a chip in which it steadily and manually works away at materials such as wood. By pressing down at an angle and steadily pushing and working away at the material it’s shaped and constructed in to something that can then be used. Chip formation is most commonly used when it comes to planning. This can shape wood in to specific angles and allow for very precise cuts and shapes that may require it. Combined, all of these methods are very useful and can assist in helping manufacturers to create useful materials and products to be distributed.
