Who makes it: 11 leading sheet aluminum companies in the U.S.

Posted by IndustryNet on Friday, August 31, 2018

100000269_sheet_of_aluminumThe recent implementation of a 10-percent tariff on aluminum highlights the metal's importance to industry and particularly the significance of the sector whose products are most extensively employed: sheet aluminum.

While aluminum might most readily bring to mind the metallic sheen of foil, sheet aluminum can be anodized and dyed to produce hundreds of colors including red, gold and black. Etching of sheet aluminum will yield a matte finish. Polishing can create a mirror bright surface.

Products in this sector are used in the manufacture of cans and other packaging. Sheet aluminum is essential in the fabrication of airplane skins. Panels for both automobiles and tractor trailers are manufactured from sheet.

Using aluminum to produce lighter-weight cars reduces annual emissions of carbon dioxide by 44 million tons. Sheet aluminum can be continuously recycled, saving more than 90 percent of the energy used to produce the primary product.

The versatile commodity also finds use in cookware and appliances. The construction industry puts sheet aluminum to work in siding, roofing, awnings, gutters and even carports. Manufacturers texture aluminum sheet to resemble wood and paint it. Military grade aluminum armor plate can deflect a 50 caliber round.

State of the sector

IndustryNet has compiled data on 68 United States sheet aluminum (sheet, plate and foil) companies that provide 12,811 jobs, a decrease of 6.2 percent from a workforce of 13,661 a year ago. Average sales for the sheet aluminum industry are $5.1 billion.

The distribution of sheet aluminum plants varies by geographic region. The most substantial number, 27 and 28 are in the Midwest and the South, respectively. The Northeast follows with 12, and the West brings up the rear with 5.

The global saga of aluminum trade continues to unfold. On June 18, 2018, the United States Commerce Department issued a preliminary determination of Chinese dumping of common alloy sheet aluminum.

Tentative measures have already been established to combat the price differentials regarding domestic stock. The department will announce its final determination Oct. 30, 2018, at which time final actions will be put in place.
