An insider look at the aluminum extrusion market

Posted by IndustryNet on Wednesday, September 19, 2018

100000275Extruded_aluminium_section_x3Aluminum extrusion offers an extensive array of design possibilities to industries as diverse as automotive, construction and power generation. Aluminum's weight, superior thermal conductivity and strength lend an advantage to many types of consumer products.

Manufacturers also choose aluminum extrusion because of its relatively low-cost tooling, which speeds the development and prototyping of new products.

Aluminum extrusions are 100 percent recyclable. Since these products do not emit significant levels of hazardous gases during processing, manufacturers employ them to simplify their regulatory compliance.

Aluminum extrusions are also corrosion resistant, making them highly desirable for use outdoors and in environmentally harsh conditions.

Aluminum extrusion companies in the U.S.

IndustryNet has gathered data on 215 U.S. aluminum extrusion companies which provide 22,138 jobs, a drop in employment of 1.77 percent over the past year.

However, average sales for the sector have risen 0.78 percent from $6.94 billion to $6.99 billion over the same period. This increase exceeds the percentage of the rise in sales in the aluminum industry as a whole by 0.23 percent from $47.69 billion to $47.80 billion.

The 215 aluminum extrusion companies are spread throughout the country:

• 83 in the Midwest (38.6 percent).
• 75 in the South (34.9 percent).
• 32 in the West(14.9 percent).
• 25 in Northeast (11.6 percent).

Of the 15 fastest growing aluminum extrusion companies, nine are in the Midwest, three are in the South and one is in the West.

Aluminum extrusion in the automotive industry

Aluminum extrusions decrease the weight and carbon footprints of motor vehicles. One pound of aluminum will replace 2 pounds of steel and will save 3 gallons of crude oil while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 20 pounds over the lifetime of an automobile.Al_extrusion_machine_with_dies

Manufacturers in North America plan a 40 percent increase in the use of aluminum in cars and light trucks by 2025. Aluminum components will include engine mounts, tailgate frames, roof consoles and running boards. Not only will these parts avoid rust, but their inherent strength and flexibility will also make them more resilient in crashes.

Aluminum in building and construction

Building and construction account for more than 60 percent of the aluminum extrusion market. Aluminum is becoming the choice for green builders. Construction utilizing aluminum extrusions earns Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) points in areas that include energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality and sustainable materials.

Demand is rising in both residential and nonresidential projects due to a rise in per-capita income and evolving lifestyles. Contractors also put aluminum extrusions to work in infrastructure projects such as bridges.

Consumer goods

Aluminum extrusions are the material of choice for many retail items. Their weather resistance makes them popular for patio furniture. Speedboats constructed of lightweight aluminum are faster than crafts built of heavier materials. Aluminum sports equipment is highly durable. Manufacturers are expected to continue adding new types of designs and products.

The sky is no limit

spacex.Aluminum extrusions are an integral part of the international space station. Boeing engineers designed the truss structures that house the International Space Station (ISS).

This intricate construction weighs over 400,000 pounds and is 140 feet long, 240 feet wide and 90 feet high. The mechanical properties and surface finish of aluminum extrusions played a critical role in making this exciting and complex scientific venture a reality.

Other avenues of growth

The government provides incentives for the use of aluminum extrusions in Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPVs), which generate renewable energy. Power generation and distribution equipment are growing markets.

Aluminum extrusions are also finding increasing use in air conditioning. According to a report in October 2017, by 2019 consumption of aluminum extrusions is expected to reach the highest level since a market downturn in 2010.
