2022 was a challenging year for U.S. manufacturers. Just as procurement and sourcing executives were starting to see relief pandemic-related supply chain disruptions, an unwelcome déjà vu of supply chain chaos emerging from the Russian invasion of Ukraine and intermittent lockdowns in China emerged, further underscoring the role geopolitical risk plays in the reliability of global supply chains. Search data on the industrial marketplace IndustryNet.com reflects a surge of domestic sourcing activity over the past several years. In the past year alone, category searches on the site rose 27% in 2022, bringing in 5.8 million searches altogether, suggesting that U.S. manufacturers are looking to crisis-proof their supply chain by finding suppliers closer to home. So what were industrial buyers searching for this year? Read on to discover the most in-demand industrial products in 2022. Top Category Searches on IndustryNet in 2022Industrial category searches on IndustryNet totaled 5.8 million in 2022, up 27% over 2021. We took those specific searches and grouped them into broader industrial categories. Here’s what buyers were on the hunt for this year. 10. WireTotal searches among 37 types of wire totaled 94,314, making wire our tenth most popular search category for all of 2022. Top wire searches included stainless steel wire, followed by steel wire, and insulated wire. The U.S. wire & cable market is estimated to be worth $15.1 billion and has reported faster growth compared to the manufacturing sector overall. ValvesValves were also at the top of many industrial buyers’ lists in 2022, ranking ninth. We saw 107,593 searches altogether from 61 separate valve categories on IndustryNet. Automotive valves were the most sought after, followed by stainless steel valves, air conditioning valves, control valves, and butterfly valves. U.S. valve manufacturers reported an average total of $17 billion in sales for 2022. The industry is a major employer, with 30,469 workers across the U.S, according to data collected by MNI. PumpsPumps were in great demand on IndustryNet in 2022, tallying 115,141 searches and ranking eighth this year. Of the 54 types of pumps listed on IndustryNet, agricultural pumps were the most sought out. This was followed by searches for hydraulic pumps, chemical pumps, vacuum pumps and water pumps. According to MNI, there are currently 1,019 pump manufacturers in the United States employing 45,223 workers. The industry reports total average sales of $27 billion in 2022. Buyers were most interested in aluminum castings and stainless-steel castings, followed by manganese steel castings, steel castings, and carbon steel castings. SteelAs prices continued to rise in 2022 and supply disruptions from fresh lockdowns in China made imports next to impossible, more industrial buyers were searching for steel suppliers closer to home on IndustryNet. Ranking #6 in 2022, searches for steel numbered 139,381 this year. The most popular subtypes included recycled steel, galvanized steel, and carbon steel. DoorsIn 2022, we saw a continued increase in searches related to the construction industry, which has been consistently growing since the pandemic. According to Oxford Economics, global construction output is expected to grow by 42%, or $4.5 trillion, between 2020 and 2030. Government stimuli and residential construction demand are seen as major contributing factors propelling growth in the market. Meanwhile, according to Graphical Research, the market for doors in North America is estimated to post a more than 4% compound annual growth rate from 2021 to 2027, spurred by growth in the construction industry as well as the rapid rate of urbanization. In keeping with this trend, searches for doors on IndustryNet have risen accordingly, bringing in 141,889 searches in 2022, ranking fifth this year for number of searches. PrintingComing in at #4 this year was the printing industry, which has consistently topped the charts for our weekly tally of the most popular searches—particularly in recent months. This is supported by Federal Reserve data, which found printing and related support activities was one of just a few industries that reported output growth in November. An increase in label and packaging printing as e-commerce continues to dominate is a major contributing factor in the industry’s growth. In 2022, searches for printing services totaled 144,059. LumberIn keeping with the general growth in the construction industry, more industrial buyers were on the hunt for lumber this year. Lumber has consistently brought in a large number of searches since widespread shortages hit the market during the pandemic. This year, searches for lumber on IndustryNet totaled 188,085, led by searches for hardwood lumber, followed by dimensional lumber, and grade hardwood lumber. Food ProductsAs inflation hit food prices across the globe in 2022, more and more buyers were looking for suppliers of food products on IndustryNet. Ranking second in our list of most-demand industries, this powerful sector brought in 318,008 searches. The food processing sector is a high-growth sector. According to MNI, there are currently 22,580 companies in the food-processing industry that employ 1.5 million workers in the United States. Food processing companies reported a total $1.7 trillion in average total sales this year, and employment in the sector has increased 1.6% in 2022. ChemicalsTaking the top spot for the most in-demand industry for 2022 on IndustryNet was the chemicals sector with 385,806 searches. According to the U.S. Chemistry Council, U.S. chemical output increased 3.9% in 2022, as pent-up demand hit the sector in the wake of the pandemic and manufacturers cranked up production. MNI reports more than 14,000 chemical industry companies in the U.S. employing nearly a million workers. U.S. chemical companies reported a total $1.8 trillion in average total sales this year and employment in the sector rose 2.1%. Industrial chemicals led searches in 2022, followed by oil field chemicals, specialty chemicals, and contract manufacturing chemicals.
