The vast majority, 74 percent, produce for domestic distribution with 24 percent distributing internationally.

Nearly all metal coatings businesses are private at 92 percent, with just 5 percent being public. It is worth mentioning that most companies are in the Midwest (32.79 percent), with New England holding the smallest percentage with 4.98 percent.

Companies can also apply the powder coating to a metal substrate via a process known as electrostatic spray deposition.

3. Industrial: 178 companies in the U.S.

Engineers create industrial coatings specifically to take advantage of the functional and protective properties. The majority of industrial coatings prevent corrosion of steel and concrete.

4. Protective Coatings: 167 companies in the U.S.

Protective coatings serve some sort of protective function instead of a decorative one and it can also be nonmetallic.

5. Corrosion-resistant Coating: 37 companies in the U.S.

This type of coating prevents corrosion by inhibiting contact between the surface and chemical compounds or other substances that cause corrosion.
