During the last part of the manufacturing process, it is shipping that ensures the safe transportation of whatever product is being produced. The shipping process has its own set of rules, standards, and regulations that needs to be followed. It can be seen as a process in its own entirety, yet it still forms an integral part of the manufacturing process.
An element that is used more often than not is pallets. Pallets make for easy lifting and transporting, especially of bulk products or materials. The reason why pallets are so popular lies in the fact that they can be used and re-used.
The pallet process is thus important as manufacturers have to keep its purpose in mind. Choosing the correct type of pallet should also be considered by companies who are doing the transportation of goods, to ensure that these products do in fact arrive in mint condition.
What materials are used during the pallet process?
There are two common types of pallet that can be produced – plastic pallets and wooden pallets. When creating plastic pallets, certain manufacturers opt to choose recycled plastic as it is cheaper. The disadvantage here is that the plastic pallets won’t be as strong as those made out of their virgin resin counterparts. When choosing to produce wooden pallets, the same rule applies: wood should preferably be quite strong in order to maintain its light weight, but also to support bulk products. The choice of nails is also considered as an important factor. These nails are after all the objects that keep the pallet in place.
How are pallets made?
Plastic pallets: plastic pallets are usually designed first. The design is of great importance because it has to be able to match its ultimate goal. This goal will depend entirely up to manufacturer of the goods he or she needs to transport. Stackable pallets make for easier stacking as its solid platform allows one to double stack.Nestable pallets are usually used in the stacking of empty pallets, because of its storage saving capacity. These two types of pallets usually differ in price. Plastic pallets are usually made by injection molding – this is an expensive process, but it delivers a high quality pallet. Injection molding pallets are then usually sold in bulk exceeding 50 000 units per purchase. An inexpensive process is structural foaming, but this may lead to a pallet that might be susceptible to damage. This is a pallet that is not advised when shipping sensitive goods. Lastly, thermoforming is another process that can be considered. It is even cheaper than injection molding and structural foaming, but the disadvantage here is that these pallets don’t usually perform well under strenuous environments.
Wooden pallets: the process of creating wooden pallets is fairly straight forward. Firstly, the wood is cut to the required size it should be. Often the wood is treated in order to strengthen it. Once the wood has been cut it is assembled as a pallet by using a high volume nail gun. Smaller orders of pallets are usually assembled by hand as the expense of using a nail gun is unnecessary. It is then delivered to the customer.
