U.S. manufacturing activity expanded far more than expected in September, according to new data released this morning by the Institute for Supply Management. The ISM�s manufacturing index soared to 60.8, topping August's reading by 2 percentage points. The U.S. is now closing in on a full year of expansion, according to ISM data. September's reading marks the U.S. manufacturing sector's 13th consecutive month of growth, and the 100th consecutive month of growth for the U.S. economy as a whole. New data from the Institute for Supply Managment released this morning shows manufacturing activity in the U.S. inched up in May. The ISM's latest Manufacturing Report on Business, a leading economic indicator based on a survey of the nation's supply executives, shows U.S. manufacturing activity rose 0.1% to 54.9% in May, from 54.8% in April, marking the sector's ninth consecutive month of growth. A reading of 50% or higher indicates expansion.
