Source: Intel Corp Oregon manufacturers added jobs over the past year, according to data collected from the state’s manufacturing companies by MNI, compiler and publisher of comprehensive business profiles of more than 460,000 U.S. industrial companies. According to MNI’s survey, Oregon added a net 1,816 jobs or nearly one percent between December 2022 and December 2023. Oregon is currently home to 4,631 manufacturers employing 225,110 workers according to MNI data. Food processing is Oregon’s top manufacturing sector based on number employees, with 35,304 workers, virtually unchanged over the year. Electronics manufacturing ranks second with 34,845 workers. Over the past year, employment in this sector rose 1.7%. Third-ranked instruments and related products accounts for 13,511 workers, with no significant change reported. Manufacturing sub-sectors that posted notable employment gains in Oregon over the year included flat glass up 70%; hardwood dimensions and flooring mills, up 36%; refrigeration & heating equipment, up 34%; wood products, up 15%; and transportation equipment, up 8%. These job gains were offset by losses in broadwoven fabric mills, down 83%; small arms, down 81%; and pressed & blown glass, down 71%. MNI’s city data reveals Portland ranks as Oregon’ top city by number of manufacturing jobs, home to 41,119 workers, with employment down 2.8% over the year. Second-ranked Hillsboro accounts for 27,297 jobs, virtually unchanged in 2023, while Beaverton employs 17,282, down nearly one percent. Top manufacturing cities in Oregon that posted employment gains over the past year include Salem, which advanced 2.8%, and Medford, which gained 4.3%. Manufacturing companies announcing expansions in Oregon included Actylis, which opened a new, 30,000 square-foot cGMP facility in Eugene, Oregon for the expansion of its API manufacturing capabilities.
